In Defense of Michelle Obama
The criticism levied against Michelle Obama for her statement that now is "the first time in her adult life she is proud of her county" is precisely why now is the time for change in America. Change is good. Michelle Obama is right. As many African-Americans can say with authority of life experience -- there has been precious few reasons for pride in the country of their birth. To the contrary, America's past and present give much basis for shame and despair. The greatness of America however, is that we don't all have to love it. Consider this scathing article by Bill O'Reilly. Sadly, O'Reilly and others like him don't get it. They seem to prefer a Nazi Fatherland that demands we slavishly wave the flag and goose-step to the anthem. Thankfully, America still offers freedom to disagree. Discontent means we're aware, and thinking. We need more leaders who are honest enough to criticize and dislike what's wrong in America, and in the process -- CHANGE to make it better. Michelle and millions of others from all walks of life have a right not to love what America IS, but very much love and believe in the *ideal* of what it SHOULD be. The hope that the Obama campaign offers is that America might get closer to that potential in our lifetime, and be inclusive of all it's "children", as MLK might say.
